William Burkhalter, MD, FAAFP, CAQSM

Dr. William Burkhalter graduated from medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina and completed a residency at the University of South Alabama Family Medicine Residency Program in Mobile, Alabama. He also completed an internship at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine in Flint, Michigan. During his residency, he received the distinguished Resident Merit Award.

Having also worked as a hospitalist, Dr. Burkhalter went back to complete a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of South Alabama and worked in Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics. He covered various high school and college teams across several sports during his tenure.

As Medical Director of Baptist OrthoNow, Dr. Burkhalter is board-certified in Family Medicine with added qualifications in Sports Medicine. His clinical interests include hip injuries and musculoskeletal ultrasounds. His more than 20 years of experience in sports injuries and general Orthopaedics, is a perfect combination for Baptist OrthoNow. 

A proud member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the American Academy of Family Physicians, he enjoys fitness, hunting and skiing in his spare time.

Dr. Burkhalter’s favorite words to live by can be found in Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
