PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency

PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency

The BMCS PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Residency Program is designed to develop high-level emergency medicine pharmacist leaders with the skills necessary to thrive in a variety of emergency medicine and critical care settings. Graduates of this program will be both confident and skilled in pharmacotherapy recommendations in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. In working with pharmacy residents, medical residents, and fellows, they will build skills required for taking a leadership role in multidisciplinary education and training of health care professionals.

Baptist Medical Center South is committed to excellence in training pharmacy residents in both clinical skills and as well-rounded professionals. We believe in a progressive approach to developing independent practice with the continued support of preceptors throughout the year.  Our goal is to train pharmacists who strive for continuous growth as a seamlessly integrated member of high-functioning multidisciplinary teams.

Baptist South Emergency Department is a comprehensive 64-bed facility with an average of over 60,000 visits per year. It serves as the primary trauma center for the south-central region of Alabama and is currently designated as a level II trauma center. Clinical pharmacists are available 21 hours a day, 7 days a week, and play a crucial role in bedside critical care, including resuscitation, stroke alerts, STEMI alerts, procedural sedation, RSI, and other high-acuity events. They also provide real-time drug information to providers, nursing staff, and various medical trainees. Additionally, our team has established strong partnerships with local Emergency Medical Service operations, allowing for resident involvement in pre-hospital care.

The residency program consists of rotations designed to provide evidence-based experiences. Core experiences typically last 5 weeks, while the length of elective experiences varies. Longitudinal experiences are completed throughout the residency year. Residents are required to fulfill the curriculum requirements, which include all core experiences, three elective experiences, and all longitudinal experiences.
