The WATCHMAN Device and Procedure
First-of-its-kind, the WATCHMAN procedure is a proven alternative to blood thinners in stroke prevention for patients with abnormal heartbeats or atrial fibrillation.
Baptist Health is proud to be the primary provider of the WATCHMAN procedure in Central Alabama.
The one-time procedure is designed to reduce the risk of strokes that begin in the left atrial appendage (LAA) where over ninety percent of stroke-causing left atrium-originating clots begin.
How WATCHMAN Works
Around the size of a quarter with a parachute-like appearance, the WATCHMAN implant device is implanted into a patient's heart for LAA closure.
Through the WATCHMAN procedure, the LAA closure significantly reduces the risk of patient stroke and may change the need for blood thinning medications over time.
AFib doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of blood thinners. WATCHMAN is a one-time, minimally invasive procedure that reduces stroke risk and bleeding worry for life.
