Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Physical medicine helps individuals resume the activities they did before their illness or injury, whether it's a chronic condition like carpal tunnel syndrome, a permanent disability, or recovery from a stroke. Physical medicine physicians treat issues that affect all major organ systems in the body, such as back pain, spinal cord injury, concussions, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and multiple sclerosis.
For more complex situations, he/she often acts as the team leader, coordinating care to ensure the best rehabilitation for the patient possible. This helps to ensure the entire patient is treated - not just the symptom. This approach provides patients with a plan of treatment that is just for them, helping to prevent future problems and establishing goals to help measure progress. This approach is non-surgical and allows the patient to attempt less extreme interventions to push the limits of what he/she can do before resorting to surgical intervention.
