Didactics and Conferences
Residents have several opportunities to attend educational sessions throughout the day and week. Each weekday morning at 8:30 a.m., a faculty member or upper-level resident gives a 30-minute didactic session before the beginning of hospital rounds. All residents on the family medicine rotation attend this session, as do any residents who have the opportunity while on other hospital-based rotations. Topics address the more common problems encountered in inpatient medicine.
Each day at noon, all residents are expected to attend an educational conference held in our outpatient facility's large classroom auditorium. Lunch is provided. We have a 13-block curriculum and our conferences follow this same format. Each block has a different theme such as cardiology, mental health or dermatology. A faculty and four residents are assigned to lead the effort for the block to determine topics and arrange speakers. Mixed in with the core topics are some longitudinal topics such as obstetrics, finances and legal issues, resident meetings, and core measures of the ACGME/CLER.
Grand Rounds are held several times per year as a joint conference of the entire medical staff, bringing in speakers from around the state on larger topics, research, and cutting-edge material. This conference is held in our UAB-Montgomery Campus medical school auditorium on the Baptist South campus and lunch is provided.
