How to Apply

The Montgomery Family Medicine Residency Program accepts eight PGY 1 residents each year. Applications are accepted only through ERAS and are reviewed by the program’s Admissions Committee. The applicants chosen for an interview will be notified primarily through ERAS. Applications must be received prior to December 31.

Minimum Criteria:

  • Must have graduated from an accredited medical school that is approved by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Must have graduated from medical school within three years of receipt of application. This can be extended to five years for postgraduate training years or while acquiring an additional professional degree such as Ph.D. or M.P.H.
  • Must have successfully completed USMLE or COMLEX step one within five years of application.
  • One must have, or be able to have, a total combined attempt at passing USMLE or COMLEX Step one and both parts of Step two in four attempts or less (no more than one failure total).
  • If USMLE or COMLEX Step three or has been taken and passed, must have passed in three attempts or less. If have taken Step three and not passed, must not have more than one failure. (Alabama law will not grant a medical license to anyone who takes more than three attempts to pass step three or who has taken step one or two more than seven years prior to application).
  • International Medical Graduate applicants must have a valid ECFMG certificate prior to submission of rank order list.
  • The program does not sponsor VISAs, but will accept applicants with an ECFMG sponsored J-1 VISA
  • One must prove competence in both spoken and written English language.
  • One must be able to show academic achievements and interests that model the philosophy of this residency, included but not limited to high academic standards in clinical rotations, outside interests in primary care, leadership positions and community involvement.

The Admissions Committee will review applications once the stated criteria are met. Candidates who meet the above criteria are not guaranteed an interview as time, space and economic capacities are limited.

While we do not have minimum score requirements, we do consider each applicant based on number of attempts. 

No, however, Step 2 CK/CE and Step 2 CS/PE must have been taken and passed in order to be ranked.

US Clinical Experience is not required, but is highly suggested and preferred.

We do not sponsor any type of visa, however, we do accept J1 visas sponsored by ECFMG.

Yes, we consider International Medical Graduates. All selections are based on performance and scores.
