Program Overview
The Baptist Health Summer Teen Volunteer Program offers students exposure to health careers through a unique service-learning opportunity. Participating students must commit to serving a minimum of 26 hours (required) to complete the program. Program participants serve in various units of interest within the hospital/clinic, assisting patients, guests and clinical personnel.
Baptist Health invites well-rounded, qualified students to apply to the program. Ideal students will demonstrate maturity appropriate for a healthcare setting and meet the educational (minimum B average) and service requirements (previous volunteer experience, participation in extra-curricular activities, teacher recommendation and personal interview) to be selected to participate.
Students who complete the program will be honored with a letter detailing their service, a certificate of participation and a graduation ceremony at the close of the summer. Students from across the River Region are admitted as participants in the program; however, space is limited at all facilities.

Volunteer Opportunities
As ambassadors for Baptist Health, teen volunteers bear the responsibility of representing Baptist Health professionally while being of service to patients and guests. Teen volunteers will have the opportunity to assist volunteer managers in determining the best placement area for them. Throughout the summer, teen volunteers may have the opportunity to serve in Clinical Units (Endoscopy, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Patient Treatment Rooms, Neuroscience, Cardiology, Postpartum, Emergency Department) and Non-Clinical Units (Human Resources, Quality Administration, Nursing Administration, Wound Care Clinic) among other departments at Baptist East, Baptist South, the Montgomery Cancer Center and Prattville Baptist Hospital/clinic.
*Please note that volunteer placement opportunities vary from year to year and vary by facility.

Employee Health Requirements
Please review carefully with your parent/guardian:
- Mandatory Health Screening: All Students receiving an acceptance letter to the program must contact Employee Health immediately to obtain an appointment during the month of May for a mandatory health screening at any of our three locations. You can reach the appointment desk by dialing 286-2739 and choosing option 0.
- Required Immunizations: Each student must bring an updated immunization record with them to the appointment. This record must show proof of two (2) MMR vaccines and (2) varicella vaccines, or an attestation by your pediatrician that you have had the varicella virus with date. If your immunization record is incomplete, please visit your pediatrician before your Employee Health appointment to get the necessary vaccines. Baptist Health does not provide any immunizations for student volunteers.
- Required TB Skin Test: Baptist Health requires two (2) negative TB skin tests to be completed on all employees and volunteers. One of these TB skin tests must be completed before your Employee Health appointment. Please bring proof of a negative TB skin test, dated within the past 12 months, with you to your appointment. If you fail to bring a negative TB skin test with you, your appointment will be canceled. Employee Health will be happy to provide the second TB skin test at the time of your health screening appointment. Any student who fails to come back in 48-72 hours to have the TB skin test read will be disqualified from program participation. Summer teen volunteers must have both TB skin tests completed to start on the first day of the program.
- COVID-19 Vaccination: Covid vaccination is no longer required to volunteer at Baptist. We are required, however, to report vaccination numbers to CMS. If you have had a COVID-19 vaccine or series of vaccines, please provide proof of that at your Employee Health screening. Students unable to fulfill their Employee Health requirements will not be able to participate in the program.
*Remember the deadline to have all Employee Health requirements completed is May 30, 2025, NO EXCEPTIONS

Students participating as Summer Teen Volunteers will be required to purchase a uniform consisting of navy scrubs (top and bottom) to wear each day of service. Students will be required to wear their uniform to orientation. Please do not purchase the uniform until after you have received confirmation of acceptance to the program.
